AWTA TEST CODE
:
T03B
OTHER NAMES
YARN STRENGTH, YARN TENSILE, YARN TENSILE STRENGTH
TEST METHODS
AS 2001.2.7ASTM D2256DEF 5037-A10ISO 2062
IMAGE
Measurement of Yarn Strength Using Bollard Jaws
APPLICATION
The method is applicable to monofilament, multifilament and spun yarns, either single, plied or cabled with the exception of some high strength yarns. It is also NOT applicable to yarns having linear densities greater than 2000 tex.
It is primarily applicable to yarns from skeins or packages, but may be used for yarns extracted from fabrics.
PRINCIPLE
A specimen of yarn is gripped between the jaws of a tensile testing machine and a tensile force applied until the yarn breaks. The force required to break the yarn and/or the yarn extension at break are recorded.
SAMPLES REQUIRED FOR TESTING
Yarn from packages
1. Bulk sample
Number of cases in shipment or lot
Minimum number of cases to be selected at random
3 or less
1
4 to 10
2
11 to 30
3
31 to 75
4
76 or more
5
2. Laboratory Sample Packages.
The laboratory sample shall consist of 10 yarn packages selected from the bulk sample, with about the same number of packages from each case and at random from the top, middle and botton layers in the cases. Where the number of packages available is less than 10, all available packages shall comprise the laboratory sample.
INTERPRETATION
Most good yarn specifications, especially where high breaking force is essential to yarn performance in use, include a requirement for breaking force and/or extension at break. The measured breaking force should be compared with the nominal.
SERVICE TARGET
