Wrap Reel For Measuring Yarn Length
APPLICATION
This method is applicable to single or plied yarns prewound onto packages such as a cone or cheese, to balls of hand knitting yarn and to skeins after winding into a ball.
The method is NOT applicable to:
(i) yarns which stretch excessively
(ii) yarns which are very stiff
(iii) yarns which have linear densities greater than 2000 tex and
(iv) yarns removed from fabrics. (See T01B and T01C).
PRINCIPLE
A number of skeins of yarn of given length are reeled from the conditioned package or packages of yarn. The skeins are weighed and the linear density of the yarn calculated in units of tex (grams per kilometre). Other units of linear density, eg. English cotton count, denier, worsted count, etc. can be calculated if required.
SAMPLES REQUIRED FOR TESTING
(i) If the variation of linear density is unknown, then 20 packages chosen at random from the lot are required.
(ii) Usually 4 packages selected at random from the lot are sufficient.
(iii) If the shipping sample only (1 package) is all that is available, several specimens would be wound from the one package.
INTERPRETATION
A tolerance of +/- 3% of nominal linear density is usually acceptable. However, very low or very high individual results may be grounds for rejection.
SERVICE TARGET
6 working days.
