APPLICATION

:

This method is applicable to the determination of the ignitability of upholstery filling materials in combination with a specified test fabric when subjected to a flaming ignition source.

PRINCIPLE

:

Filling materials are combined with a specified covering fabric, placed in a test rig and subjected to a gas-flame for a specified time. The flame source is removed and any flaming or progressive smouldering is observed. If progressive smouldering or flaming occurs, the test is discontinued. If no progressive smouldering or flaming is observed, the test is repeated in a fresh position. The specimen is then dismantled and examined internally for progressive smouldering.

SAMPLES REQUIRED FOR TESTING

:

Filling Material : Two test assemblies are necessary of dimensions:

(a) one piece 450 x 300 x 75mm

(b) one piece 450 x 150 x 75mm

Where the filling material is less than 75mm thick the test assembly shall be built up to the required thickness by adding a further layer of the filling material.

INTERPRETATION

:

The requirements of the interim standard shall be deemed to have been met when, for foam filling materials, the test assembly does not exhibit any of the characteristics of progressive smouldering ignition or flaming ignition and for non-foam filling materials smouldering ignition and flaming ignition have not occurred or have occurred only by way of damage which does not exceed certain defined limits and are not accopmanied by flaming or smouldering of the filling material itself after removal of the test flame.
