APPLICATION

:

This method is applicable to skins and hides of either light or heavy leathers.

PRINCIPLE

:

A rectangular specimen in which a slot of specified dimensions has been cut is mounted between special specimen holders in a tensile testing machine and a tensile load applied. The highest load reached during tearing is recorded as the tearing load.

SAMPLES REQUIRED FOR TESTING

:

All pieces selected for test shall be free from obvious defects such as scratches and flay cuts. Total area of the piece should be about 1m2.

INTERPRETATION

:

The sample of leather will need to meet the specifications layed down by customer. As a guide to performance DEF(AUST) Standards list minimum load for leathers related to their thickness.

e.g.  1.00mm minimum load 47 newtons
   2.00mm minimum load 126 newtons
   3.00mm minimum load 205 newtons
