APPLICATION

:

This method is applicable to all fabrics but is used mainly in the area of coated fabrics and open weave fabrics and products.

PRINCIPLE

:

A rectangular specimen of fabric in which a tongue has been cut is mounted in the jaws of a tensile tester and either the median or maximum value of the force required to propagate tearing is recorded.

SAMPLES REQUIRED FOR TESTING

:

A sample of fabric approximately 1.5m2 in area. The sample should not have been cut within 2m of the lead end or tail end of the piece, roll or lot.

INTERPRETATION

:

Fabric specifications frequently include a requirement for tearing strength. Test results should be completed with nominal values as given in the specification.

Typical minimum for swimwear and ladies apparel is 6.7 newtons minimum.

Typical minimum for woven dress fabric 11 newtons minimum.

Typical minimum for water repellent coated fabrics is 13 newtons minimum.
