Seam Strength Specimen Showing Opening of Seam
APPLICATION
This method is applicable to apparel fabrics, household furnishing fabrics and upholstery fabrics. It is NOT applicable to certain industrial fabric, e.g. ducks, heavy canvas and belting.
PRINCIPLE
A strip of fabric is folded and stitched across its width. A force is applied to the strip at right angles to the seam and the extent to which the seam opens is measured. A subsequent measurement of the seam opening is made under minimal seam stress.
An alternative method is to take all seams to a specified width of opening (6mm) and measure the force required to open the seam to that extent.
SAMPLES REQUIRED FOR TESTING
Sufficient material to prepare five length and five width specimens each approximately 150 x 100mm. A piece of fabric 1.5m2 in area should be sufficient. This piece should not have any selected within 2m of the lead end or tail end of the piece or roll.
INTERPRETATION
Many fabric specifications include a requirement for yarn slippage.
Typical specifications for swimwear is 90 newtons minimum force for 6.0mm opening.
Typical specifications for ladies lightweight apparel, umbrella fabric, etc., is 67 newtons minimum force for 6.0mm opening.
Typical specifications for ladies woven dress fabric, mens shirting is 111 newtons for 6.0mm opening.
