APPLICATION
This method is applicable to the pile yarns of carpets manufactured from all wool or wool rich fibre blends.
PRINCIPLE
Previously measured short lengths of yarn are boiled in water for a given time. After drying, their lengths are remeasured and the number of turns of twist remained in the short lengths counted.
By comparison with the original length and twist 'length set' and 'twist set' are determined.
SAMPLES REQUIRED FOR TESTING
Yarns on cones or in hank form.
INTERPRETATION
Yarn set can very from 0 percent - no set to 100 percent - complete set.
Twist set and length set are of particular importance in yarns meant to be used in cut pile carpets. In hank dyed yarns, the dyeing process is also the setting process, whereas stock dyed yarns must be set by a separate process. In both instances, length and twist set should exceed 60 percent.
