APPLICATION

:

The method is applicable to any textile floor covering which has a tuft (cut) or loop pile yarn structure.

PRINCIPLE

:

A loop or one end of a tuft of pile yarn is gripped and the maximum force required to remove each loop or tuft from the carpet backing is measured. A mean value for each type of tuft is calculated and reported.

SAMPLES REQUIRED FOR TESTING

:

A half metre full width of the floor covering.

INTERPRETATION

:

Most carpet specifications include a requirement for minimum tuft withdrawal force.

For satisfactory performance of commercial tufted carpets, minimum requirements for mean withdrawal force is usually;

- woven - individual loops - NOT less than 10N;

- woven - individual cut tufts - NOT less than 6N;

- tufted - individual loop - NOT less than 30N;

- tufted - individual cut tuft - NOT less than 10N.

Domestic carpets classified by the Australian Carpet Classification Scheme (ACCS) must meet mandatory minimum requirements for mean withdrawal force of;

- woven - individual loop - NOT less than 10N;

- woven - individual cut tuft - NOT less than 3N;

- tufted - individual loop - NOT less than 20N;

- tufted - individual cut tuft - NOT less than 10N.

When high twist singles yarns are loosely folded with a small twist, tufted or woven as one yarn, and then cut, they tend to appear and act as individual tufts of singles yarn. AWTA Textile Testing policy is to treat these as singles tufts for the purpose of the test since these are the elements which may produce sprouting in service.
