APPLICATION

:

The method is applicable to all forms of textile floor coverings. Soft underlays of all types may also be measured.

PRINCIPLE

:

The thickness of a conditioned specimen of textile floor covering is measured as the distance between a reference plate on which the specimen rests and a parallel circular presser foot exerting a pressure of 2kPa (approximately 20g/sq.cm) area of defined size. Soft underlays are usually measured at a pressure of 1kPa. Thickness is expressed to the nearest 0.1mm.

SAMPLES REQUIRED FOR TESTING

:

A piece of floor covering approximately 500mm square. Where the floor covering has more than one thickness in the construction, all must be included in the sample piece.

INTERPRETATION

:

Thickness is usually included in the carpet specification. A tolerance of
+/- 5% of nominal is usually acceptable.
