Trends in Wool Production within States by Wool Statistical Area

Legend

AWTA Ltd's test certificate database has been analysed to create animated GIFs which display maps indicating wool production in Australia, based on statistical areas within states, since 1991-92.

These maps are not 100% accurate, as not all lots tested are submitted with the wool statistical area provided. However, they do provide a very clear indication of what areas have reduced (or increased) production from year to year, due to drought or to economic factors.

The GIFs are provided in two different sizes, so you should select the smaller size if you have a low connection speed. The can be accessed via the links provided on the pages for each state.  Copies of the maps for individual year can be downloaded using the links below the animated gif embedded in these pages.

The colours on the maps represent ranges (in kilograms) based on weight of greasy wool tested in each wool statistical area. The legend for these colours (see adjacent) is displayed on each map, and is the same for each map.

Legend

There is a significant proportion of wool that cannot be assigned to a statistical area. The amount varies from year to year and also from state to state, but is strongly influenced by the quantities sold privately rather than through auction. This 'unspecified' wool can be classified into three groups - Unknown (Unk.), Bulk Class (Bulk) and Interlots (Int.) - see adjacent legend. This legend is also displayed on each map, and the colour of each classification relates to the ranges specified in the legend above.
