AWTA Mulesing Status statistics

Wool growers declare “Mulesing Status” information along with other details pertaining to Dark & Medullated Fibre Risk to their broker or selling agent through the National Wool Declaration scheme.  This data is then passed on to AWTA where it is published on our Test Certificates and stored in our Central database. This process occurs for virtually all wool which is presale tested and hence AWTA can collate and report mulesing status information to the industry.

Information is now published on the AWTA website which shows the total quantity of non-mulesed (NM), ceased mulesed (CM) and pain relief (PR) wool tested each month. An example of the graph is shown below.

The chart shows:

  • The percentage of all bales tested for the current and previous season that were declared as non-mulesed (NM), pain relief (PR) and ceased mulesing (CM); and
  • The total number of NM, CM and PM bales tested this season compared to last season.

The figures include data for wools sold outside of the traditional auction system.  However, they do not include mulesing information that may have been added to sale catalogues after testing, unless AWTA has been advised to amend the associated certificates prior to auction. Despite this minor omission, the graph is an accurate indication of the volume of non-mulesed wool produced in Australia.
