LASERSCAN

The Sirolan-LaserscanTM is used to determine: the Mean Fibre Diameter, distribution of diameter (SD), Coefficient of Variation (CV), % of fibres less than 30 micron (Comfort Factor), distribution histogram, and Fibre Curvature of clean wool conditioned in a standard atmosphere. The relevant test method is IWTO-12.

The measurements are carried out by passing prepared fibre snippets, which are automatically dispersed in a carrier liquid, through a measurement cell. In the cell, fibres intercept a laser beam and the resulting changes in beam intensity are converted to diameter readings by a computer. A parallel optoelectronic processing circuit and fibre optic discriminator is used to confirm valid measurements and reject non-fibre particles.

The instrument is calibrated using 8 standard wool tops.

Recommended Operating Conditions and Training:

Temperature:

  • 16 to 24 degrees centigrade.

Humidity:

  • Between 20% and 80% relative humidity (non-condensing).

Electrical noise:

  • Ensure there are no nearby sources of electrical noise (large electric motors, welding equipment, etc).

Mechanical shocks:

  • The Laserscan must be operated on a stable vibration free floor.
  • The instrument is classified as "very delicate" and falls into the transport category of medical equipment. For example, it must be transported with an optical bench restraining strap deployed. Special care should be taken when transporting the instrument on unsealed roads, for example air cushions.

Dust:

  • A dust free environment is highly recommended.

Ventilation:

  • The rear of the instrument should not be adjacent to a wall.

Mains Power:

  • Supply voltage must be within the range of 220 and 240 VAC.
  • A generator should be checked for compliance with this range by a licensed electrician prior to use.

Training:

  • All customers are required to have 1 day of basic operating training, and should be appropriately qualified or have adequate technical support facilities.
