LASERSCAN Accessories
The Laserscan instrument can be supplied with a number of accessories. Whether or not these are required depends upon the final application.

Guillotine |
The guillotine is designed to sample aligned assemblies of fibres. It produces a sample of fibre snippets of approximately 2mm length . It cannot be used for sampling raw wool except in instances where a sample is required from a point along an individual staple.
The Guillotine is an essential accessory for calibrating the Laserscan for measurement of wool sliver and for obtaining subsamples of sliver for measurement. It may also be used for calibrating instruments used within Fleece Testing Laboratories or in on-farm applications such as the Sirolan™ Fleecescan, where the accuracy and precision required for raw wool measurements is not as rigorous as that specified in IWTO-12. |

Mini-core |
The mini-core is designed to sample aligned and/or randomly oriented assemblies of fibres. It produces a sample of approximately 2mm length fibre snippets, but within which there is a wider variation in snippet length than samples obtained using a Guillotine. An original sample mass of approximately 30-50 grams must be available.
The minicore is an essential accessory for preparing snippet subsamples of greasy and scoured wool. It is also essential if the intended application of the Laserscan is for certifying the fineness characteristics of raw wool using IWTO-12. This test specification requires that the preparation of snippet subsamples from calibration tops must be obtained by minicoring, thus replicating the subsampling of the raw wool to be tested.. |

Forced Air Dryer |
The Forced Air Dryer is designed to for drying fibre snippets after they have been cleaned with an organic solvent. It is usually used in conjunction with a minicore for preparing fibre snippets from raw wool.
The most common application of the Forced Air Dryer is in raw wool testing applications such as fleece testing. However, it may also be used in instances where snippet samples from wool sliver, obtained by Guillotine or Mini-Core, are cleaned with solvent prior to measurement to remove lubricating oils.
Solvent cleaning operations require adequate attention be given to operator safety. It is recommended that all solvent cleaning operations be conducted in a well ventilated space, such as a laboratory fume cupboard. Care must also be taken to avoid any skin contact with the solvent. |
