ATLAS
The Automatic Tester for Length and Strength (ATLAS) is used to measure the length, strength and position of break of greasy wool staples. The density of esch staple is calculated using the weight and length of the staple. Staple strength is reported in Newtons per Kilotex (N/Ktex). This test is in accordance with IWTO-30-92.

ATLAS instrument |
- The instrument accepts staples on its feed belt and delivers them one by one to the length measuring section. Staple are conveyed through an optical device which measures its length. From there the staple is fed by a pair of belts to the strength section, where a set of jaws grip it at either end and extend it, measuring the breaking force. The broken pieces are blown down on to two balances where their masses are measured. From this data the length in millimetres, the strength in Newtons per kilotex and the position of break are determined. A computer controls all operations and keeps the instrument's operator informed as testing proceeds. Uncorrected strength results are corrected using a separate program after inputting wool base, vegetable matter and wool category.
