Wool Selling
Wool is sold in a number of ways in Australia.
Traditionally, auction sales and private sales were the only ways a wool grower could sell his/her wool.
The open cry auction still handles the largest amount of sales. Approximately 85%-90% of wool produced in Australia is still sold this way.
Private sales occur when a wool grower sells directly from his farm to a private treaty merchant, who then on-sells to a wool processor or an agent for a wool processor.
In recent years small quantities of wool are being sold via internet selling systems run by various wool brokers or independent operators.
