Shearing

Shearing is one of Australia's oldest occupations, and was important in the formation of the Union movement in Australia.

The images collected here represent the evolution of shearing since the industry began in the early 1800's.

The wool industry, particularly shearing, was important to the development of Australia and many aspects of Australian culture.

Much of Australia's folklore is based around the wool industry as are the origins of the country's folk music such as 'Walzing Matilda'. Likewise much the country's literature, both novels and poetry, is also derivative of the industry.
