Why can't I measure the diameter of my wool using OFDA rather than LASERSCAN?
Yu can. AWTA Ltd does offer an OFDA Certification service.
However, it is important that the Australian wool industry has a standard technique for certifying the fibre diameter of all lots. This enables buyers and exporters to directly compare the results of different lots as well as to assemble processing consignments. AWTA Ltd selected LASERSCAN to provide this service because overall the LASERSCAN technology is superior to the OFDA for routine use in commercial Test Houses.
Nevertheless, clients are able to request an OFDA test, but at an additional cost. In all such cases, a LASERSCAN measurement is always provided, since this is the standard service and it also ensures that the lot can be incorporated in a processing consignment.
