First established as a subsidiary of Australian Wool Services in 2001, Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) became a fully independent public company limited by shares and owned by Australian woolgrowers in 2002.

Its mission is to drive research, development and innovation that will increase the long-term profitability of Australian woolgrowers.

AWI initiates, commissions and delivers research and development (R&D) to Australian woolgrowers. The company works through alliances and contracts and, where possible,  commercialises R&D outcomes. Its primary aim is the adoption of technology - on farm and along the global wool pipeline.

AWI also provides trade development and market intelligence services on behalf of Australian woolgrowers. Its role is to provide government with economic and social data to support Australian representations to other nations
